Edward F. Dolan's thorough and thoughtful survey of English-language war movies made up until 1985. Although most deal with conventional warfare, the book also discusses films about military life generally (An Office and a Gentleman), postwar trauma (Best Years of Our Lives, Coming Home) and revolutions (Reds). Fascinating as a portrait of the post-Vietnam American cultural canon, years before the Gulf War, 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq and the permanent War on Terror made it plain that war was the country's engine and natural state of being.
